Healthcare jobs such as Registered Nurses, LPN's, LVN's and related Vocational Technicians provide over 15 million jobs in the United States alone. Most healthcare jobs require 4 years of college, such as a psychology degree, or bachelors degree in biology. The American Hospital Association is the national organization that represents and serves all types of hospitals, health care networks, and their patients and communities. Founded in 1898, the American Hospital Association provides education for health care leaders and is a source of information on behavioral medicine and mental health programs.

The outlook for technical medical careers is especially bright. Opportunities for employment for medical laboratory technicians are expected to increase by 10% to 20% in the next eight years. The increasing number of elderly people is seen as a factor in this growth. As people age they have more medical problems, and hospitals will require more laboratory technicians to perform lab work for them. Aside from a good salary, most medical personnel receive comprehensive medical and dental benefits, as well as retirement plans.

Medical Lab Technologist Training

Medical laboratory technologists and lab technicians collect samples and perform tests to analyze body fluids, tissue, and other substances. An entry-level job for lab technologists usually requires a bachelors degree in medical technology or life sciences. Medical lab technicians (lab techs), on the other hand, need only an accredited associate's degree program in clinical laboratory science. Coursework emphasizes laboratory skills, including safety procedures and lab management. Medical laboratory technologists and technicians can obtain a general certification as a medical laboratory technologist or technician, respectively, or a certification in a specialty, such as cytotechnology or medical biology. For credentialing information, visit the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science.

Employment of medical lab techs is projected to grow 16% in the coming years. An increase in the aging population is expected to lead to a greater need to diagnose medical conditions, such as cancer or type II diabetes. Average salary for medical and clinical laboratory technologists and technicians was $50,550 in May 2015, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Technical programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grant applications, combined with academic scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings make up the remaining two-thirds. The official FAFSA website is fafsa.ed.gov and is free to use. Many parents make mistakes when filling out the FAFSA information, including leaving some fields blank, spelling names wrong, and not entering social security numbers completely. According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career.

Student loans typically have variable interest rates while federal student loans have fixed rates. Financial aid may be administered through the Department of Education or your school's financial aid office. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to Washburn Tech math department ranking, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. The Gates Millennium Scholars program is a minority scholarship program targeted towards outstanding African-American, American-Indian, and Latino students.
